A few weeks ago, I declared to one of my girlfriends that since we were not expecting any company during the month of December, and I had been in a bit of a blue flunk since daylight savings weekend, I was seriously considering skipping the whole Christmas decorating thing this year. She responded with an astonished, “What? YOU skip decorating for Christmas? You’ve got enough stash to deck your entire neighborhood. I know you – you HAVE to decorate for Christmas”.
She was right. Even though I said I didn’t care if I decorated for Christmas, I really did. I love Christmas – the traditions, the bling, the scottie dog pajamas… but the thought of dragging out all of those containers of decorations felt overwhelming. Of course, if I procrastinated too long, the season would be over. After a couple of fun weekends of shopping, enjoying sugar cookies, and finding the radio station playing Christmas music, it felt like I was getting my Christmas spirit back. Now, about the decorating…
What if I turned it into a game this year? Or some sort of challenge for me? Hmm. That sounded interesting. I made a few notes, and put my plan into action. In 30 minute intervals WITHOUT removing any containers from the storage room, I gathered items to create small holiday vignettes throughout the house using some of my favorite Christmas items. Vintage tablecloths, shiny tinsel, greenery, cross stitch projects from Christmas’ past, and paper crafting creations could be incorporated in the various displays.

My plan let me decorate without feeling overwhelmed. I could stop whenever I wanted to with nothing left undone. And the bonus – my husband didn’t have to carry the endless stream of containers upstairs (something that I’m sure he is very grateful for this year)!
Here’s to decking the halls,
Lorrie
